Vinitaly : Forty years of great wines

Two new exhibition halls will be ready by end-March, expanding net area to almost 80 thousand square metres welcoming more than one hundred new exhibitors compared to the 2005 edition, for a total of 4,200 direct and indirect companies from 30 countries.

The 40th Vinitaly - the International Wine and Spirits Exhibition, scheduled 6-10 April 2006 (www.vinitaly.com) is already a fully-booked, record-making event.

The exhibition over the last 40 years has become the world landmark for the sector. It is the major promotional appointment for wine excellence, business, understanding new trends, launching innovations on the market and keeping ahead of future developments.

Vinitaly - set to welcome 140 thousand professional operators from more than 100 countries - highlights every aspect of wine thanks to its role as a "meeting place" for professional operators and companies, managers in large-scale distribution and catering, opinion leaders and journalists, sommeliers and technicians. This tried and tested formula has helped the entire wine industry in Italy to grow and make its name all over the world, becoming a household name for international consumers. Growth parameters for the event and the satisfaction expressed by exhibitors (90% at the last edition) confirm the role of leadership built over the years - as well as the ever-closer attention VeronaFiere ensures as regards constant improvement of its services and infrastructures, hosting and communication. Direct marketing action ensured contacts between companies and Italian and international operators (143,020 in 2005, of whom 30,196 international from 100 countries), representatives of organised distribution and the "horeca" channel (hotels, restaurants and catering), helping to promote contracts and commercial relationships within a context of continual and constant support over time by VeronaFiere itself.

Layout of the exhibition

Sol, the International Exhibition of Virgin and Extra Virgin Olive Oil, now at its 12th edition, and Enolitech, the International Exhibition of wine-growing, oenology and olive-growing and oil-making techologies, are hosted in halls F & G..

The current regional layout envisages: Emilia Romagna in Hall 1, Sicily in Hall 2, Trentino in Hall 3, Veneto in Halls 4 & 5, Alto Adige and Friuli in Hall 6, Marches in Hall 7, Tuscany in Halls 8 and D, Piedmont in Hall 9, Abruzzo in Hall 11 and Puglia in Hall 10. Hall A will host Latium, Hall B various Consortia, with Umbria, Sardinia, Basilicata and Campania in Hall C.

Lombardy, as for the last two years, will occupy the second floor of Palaexpo - where, as of this edition, the new single exhibition press centre will be set up. International Exhibitors will be hosted on stands in Halls 3 and 11.

Internationalisation

VeronaFiere is implementing major promotional action through the Vinitaly World Tour. In the wake of huge success in 2005 in Russia, the United States and China, 2006 has already seen the event travel to India (Vinitaly India 17-19 January in Mumbay and New Delhi); May will welcome Russia (Vinitaly Russia 25-27 May in Moscow and St. Petersburg), then the United States (Vinitaly US Tour 24-26 October in New York and San Francisco), Japan (Vinitaly Japan 21 November, Tokyo) and China (Vinitaly China in Shanghai 23-25 November). Internationalisation is fundamental for tackling global competition and Vinitaly sustains small-medium companies in the search for new development and sales opportunities on the most dynamic and interesting markets. These efforts were launched some years ago and are in great demand among companies and institutions seeking outlets and targeted initiatives helping to promote sales of the quality Italian agro-food products.

Competitions and events

Prestigious "competitive" appointments - such as the 14th International Wine Competition (the "world wine championships" scheduled 29 March - 2 April 2006), the 11th International Packaging Competition (16 March), the Communicator of the Year and Young Communicator of the Year (Media) and the Best Wine List Competition for Italian restaurants abroad – are joined by: Gulliver's Travels, in collaboration with the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) - a wine tour involving the best wines from France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Hungary, Greece and Croatia in contrast with "standard taste" focusing on wines made in vocational territories; Food & Wine Pairing, where the best dishes in high-level European gastronomy interpreted by the Jeunes Restaurateurs d'Europe are matched with great Italian wines; Taste & Dream- tastings to dream about; Trendy today, Big tomorrow for emerging companies; and Grappa & C. A tasting dedicated to spirits and by now a major, high quality event for experts and enthusiasts. Vinitaly for You will also be held again in Palazzo Gran Guardia, involving the entire city through the Vinitaly Wine Store, the Young People's Wine Bar and Aperitifs with Taste.

Sol and Enolitech

Vinitaly is flanked by Sol, the International Exhibition of Virgin and Extra Virgin Olive Oil, now at its 12th edition, and Enolitech, the ninth International Exhibition of wine-growing, oenology and olive-growing and oil-making technologies. Sol has become the landmark appointment for the national and international olive-growing sector, while Enolitech is viewed as the ideal showcase for technological innovation in wine and olive oil production.

History of Vinitaly:

Vinitaly is the event that more than any other has traced the evolution of the national and international wine system, helping to make wine one of the most captivating and dynamic realities in the primary sector.

1967: 22-23 September - the Palazzo della Gran Guardia hosted the Italian Wine Days. This was the official "baptism" of Vinitaly. 1969: The third edition of the Italian Wine Days saw 130 wine-makers exhibit their products alongside conventions.

1971: The event became Vinitaly – Wine Exhibition : a full-scale trade exhibition. An auction of highly-prized wines was organised by Agriturist and guided by Mario Soldati. Vinitaly was also joined by a trade section covering machinery, equipment and products for oenology and the first edition of the DOC Wines Catalogue Exhibition.

1978: Vinitaly gained qualification as an “international” exhibition and thus welcomed participation by companies outside Italy. 1980: Vinitaly was rescheduled and has since always been held in April.

1987: Vinitaly welcomed the first Olive Exhibition. 1988: The Olive Exhibition became SOL. Distilla was also set up - the Exhibition of Grappa, Brandy and Spirits.

1995: Vinitaly was merged with Distilla and was renamed Vinitaly-International Wine and Spirits Exhibition.

1998: The international status of Vinitaly was confirmed and re-launched by VeronaFiere's decision to move into China (Shanghai) with China Wine, a positive experience that was repeated in following years.

The sector dedicated to wine and oil became a specific show - Enolitech, the Exhibition of Technology for Wine-Growing, Oenology/Olive-Growing and Olive Oil Production.

2002 and 2003: The exhibition also “conquered” America with Vinitaly U.S. Tour and also attended IFOWS, the Italian Food and Wine Show in Mumbay, India.

A new multi-storey car park for exhibitors with 2200 places was inaugurated.

2004: The Vinitaly brand was promoted - for the first time, after six years of presence - in China and - an absolute innovation - in Russia. The Vinitaly US Tour travelled to Miami and San Francisco.

2005: Internationalisation of the brand serving the Italian wine system continued. New efforts in India with Ifows prepared the ground for the first full-scale edition of Vinitaly India. May saw the second edition of Vinitaly Russia and October welcomed the US tour (Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles). November - by now a consolidated tradition - saw Shanghai host the 7th edition of Vinitaly China. The main exhibition in Verona (April) saw the definitive launch of new initiatives combining wine and international catering with "Gulliver's Travels" and "Wine & Food Pairings", as well as offering space for emerging producers through "Trendy Today - Big Tomorrow" and promoting meetings with buyers and the Ho.Re.Ca. channel.

2006: Vinitaly "comes of age" and celebrates its 40th Anniversary with two new exhibition halls in Verona - as well as expanding its presence on international markets: Tokyo, Japan, in November (21), joined by the first edition with the Vinitaly brand in India (17 and 19 January in Mumbay and New Delhi), the third in Russia with St. Petersburg as the innovation alongside well-consolidated Moscow (25 and 27 May), the Vinitaly US Tour 24-26 October (New York and San Francisco) and China (Vinitaly China in Shanghai 23-25 November).

An integrated promotional system serving the country system and one of its most important world-wide ambassadors: wine.
